The goals of public involvement are to effectively educate and engage the public on the Pinto Valley Mine EIS to solicit meaningful public input during key phases of the EIS process. The scoping phase of the EIS is the first formal opportunity for the public to provide comments on the proposed project.
The Tonto National Forest issued a Notice of Intent to prepare the Pinto Valley Mine EIS on March 28, 2017, initiating the formal scoping period for the project. The Forest Service hosted two public scoping meetings on April 18 and April 20, 2017 to provide the public with an opportunity to ask questions; learn more about the proposed project; and to provide comments that will help inform the scope of analysis for the PVM EIS. The scoping period closed on April 27, 2017.

The next formal comment period for public involvement after scoping is completed is when the Draft EIS is released for public review. Publication of the Notice of Availability of the Draft EIS in the Federal Register initiates the formal public review period, a minimum of 45 days. The Tonto National Forest will hold public meetings on the Draft EIS that likely will be held in the Globe-Miami area and the town of Superior for interested parties. The formal public review period and public meetings will provide individuals, agencies, groups, and tribes with an opportunity to comment on the Draft EIS and ask questions.
